Welcome Richard Scott – the PGA awaits
Early tomorrow, Richard Scott, Canada’s newest professional golfer and the pride of the RCGA, will announce that Wellington Financial is one of his new long term corporate partners.
Our firm’s own corporate strategy is quite simple: try to back the right companies, with the support of the right limited partners. Over the past six plus years, we’ve enjoyed the success that this simple strategy has wrought. But as a corporate entity, how do you promote yourself in a cluttered sea of financial services providers?
Speed, integrity, doing what you say you’ll do, are just three of our team’s traits. They help build a reputation. But how do you propel awareness of a brand?
From that standpoint, we’ve decided to use our modest resources to help two of Canada’s best golfers in their dream to make it to the PGA. First it was Danny King, who just recently won his 20th tournament when he successfully defended his title at the Canadian PGA Club Pro Championship in Florida last month.
Now, we are proud to link with Richard Scott. Canada’s best young golfer. Period.
Scott’s move to the pro ranks didn’t come as a surprise according to this Canadian Press story. His track record is tremendous. Here’s an excerpt:
“If Scott reaches his potential, he could become one of the best golfers this country has ever produced. There is no certainty that it will happen, but turning pro is the first step.
Scott became only the sixth man in the last 100 years to win a third Canadian Amateur title this summer and led Canada to a second-place finish at the world team amateur championship in South Africa last month.
He also won an NCAA team championship with the University of Georgia in 2005 and was a two-time all-American.
‘He has a level of experience and maturity that I dare say no one in Canada has ever had at this age,’ said national men’s team coach Henry Brunton, who has worked with Scott for the past eight years. ‘He’s got an incredible amount of experience and he’s really going to be able to draw on it. It’s time. It’s time for him to get out there and compete with top-level pros.’
Scott had pretty much made his decision [to go pro] before going to South Africa for the world amateur. His great play there only solidified things.
He shot 12 under over four rounds at that event and finished in a tie for second individually – a ‘breakthrough performance,’ according to Brunton. ‘We haven’t seen him go that low, that many times in a row, under pressure,’ Brunton said. ‘He really established himself as a world-class player.'”
Wellington Financial is delighted to work with some the best entrepreneurs in Canada. And what’s more entrepreneurial, after all, than the PGA?
We hope that both will be playing at the Canadian Open in August. Danny King won another slot for next year when he won the Canadian PGA Club Pro Champsionship. Richard Scott also got a pass for the second year in a row when he won the Canadian Amateur Championship, but I fear he lost that right when he turned pro last month. But there are plenty of chances for him to make his way onto the Angus Glen North Course.
We’ll keep you posted as these two fine players pursue their dreams.
Richard, what we may lack in size we make up for with foresight!
Welcome aboard, and thanks for having us.
