Sunnybrook NICU campaign update part 2

A couple of months ago, we kicked off a $170,000 fundraising campaign to raise the funds necessary for a digital echocardiography imaging system. The system would be housed at the Sunnybrook Hospital neo natal intensive care unit, currently housed at Women’s College Hospital.

The NICU serves hundreds of families a year. Most days, the suite is filled to capacity with 36 babies, with each isolette stationed in merely 30 square feet of space. The cramped quarters has recently made news in The Toronto Star and Toronto Sun newspapers.

This machine, once we succeed, will allow specialists at The Hospital for Sick Children, for example, to provide dramically faster reads of heart problems, among other things.

Thanks to the generosity of some wonderful people and firms, we’ve received about $88,000 to date (52%) in cash, and a close friend has pledged another $20,000 beyond that as part of his $25,000 contribution (Sunnybrook naming opportunities begin at $25k). My wife and I have made an additional financial pledge totalling $50,000 towards Sunnybrook’s $40 million capital campaign for the new perinatal wing, which will eventually house the NICU unit…but we’re hoping to not have to count that towards our $170,000 goal.
